Las Posadas

We’ve brought back our special Holiday Release for 2023: ‘Las Posadas’  — A Mexican Coffee Blend

What is Las Posadas? It is a special way that Christmas is celebrated in Mexico, other countries in Latin America, as well as parts of Texas and some other places in the United States. From December 16th to the 24th, groups of people go house to house singing Christmas carols and at some point the group gets invited in for holiday treats and festivities. Some treat it as just caroling but the symbolism is actually well thought out and has a deeper religious, or spiritual, meaning.

Although it has religious roots, las posadas had become a tradition for many who are gathering with friends and families, singing songs door to door and sharing food and drinks, all of which can bring neighborhoods and communities together during the holiday season.

The Mexican coffee used for this release are a blend of two different coffees. The first is a Caturra variety, honey processed, bean from Finca La Laja in Veracruz. The second is a  Bourbon variety, washed processed, bean from CEPCO, which is the Oaxaca State Coffee Producers Network.

The first coffee bean used for this release is from the La Laja family farming and milling group in Veracruz, Mexico. Their farm began in 1920 when Hermilo Sampieri bought his first coffee farm in Huatusco. Eventually his son joined the business and started the milling and export side. Their wet mills are in Veracruz and Puebla and their dry mill and export office is in Veracruz. This honey processed coffee bean is a blend from two farms: Finca La Laja and Finca El Mirador. After depulping, the coffee was dried slowly on covered raised beds for 20 days.

The second coffee bean in the blend hails from the southwestern Mexican state of Oaxaca. This bean has a rich cultural history––since 1989, the Oaxaca State Coffee Producers Network (CEPCO) has been uniting and supporting producers in order to create the highest quality bean with no stale flavors. The funds from CEPCO’s efforts went on to promote women’s organizations, provide support for families, and finance coffee production infrastructure improvements. Today, 90% of CEPCO’s farmers own less than 2 hectares to ensure a smooth harvest.
